Far-Ultraviolet Color Gradients in Early-Type Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
We discuss far-UV (1500 Å) surface photometry and FUV–B color profiles for 8 E/S0 galaxies from images taken with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, primarily during the Astro-2 mission. In three cases, the FUV radial profiles are more consistent with an exponential than a de Vaucouleurs function, but there is no other evidence for the presence of a disk or of young, massive stars. In all cases except M32 the FUV–B color becomes redder at larger radii. There is a wide range of internal radial FUV–B color gradients. However, we find no correlation between the FUV–B color gradients and internal metallicity gradients based on Mg absorption features. We conclude that metallicity is not the sole parameter controlling the “UV upturn component” in old populations. Color Gradients in Early-type Galaxies: Dependence on Environment and Redshift
Color gradients in early-type galaxies contain valuable clues about their formation and evolutionary histories and mechanisms. We examine color gradients in 1,700 early-type galaxies in 159 galaxy clusters spanning a redshift range of 0.05 to 0.2. We find that color gradients strongly depend on the environment where galaxies reside, with steeper color gradients in poor rather than rich clusters...
متن کاملUv Properties of Early-type Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We study the UV properties of a volume limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster combining new GALEX far(1530 Å) and near-ultraviolet (2310 Å) data with spectro-photometric data available at other wavelengths. The sample includes 264 ellipticals, lenticulars and dwarfs spanning a large range in luminosity (MB ≤ -15). While the NUV to optical or near-IR color magnitude relations...
متن کاملOptical − Nir Color Gradients in Early Type Galaxies at Z . 1 . 0 1
Recent studies based on line indices of nearby early-type galaxies suggest that stars in the galaxies’ inner part may be younger and more metal rich than stars in the outer part. If confirmed, the finding has a profound implication for the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies, since such age gradients naturally arise if merging played an important role in their formation/evolution. As...
متن کاملColor Gradients in Early-type Galaxies in Clusters at the Redshift from 0.37 to 0.56
Color gradients in elliptical galaxies in distant clusters (z = 0.37 − 0.56) are examined by using the archival deep imaging data of Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Obtained color gradients are compared with the two model gradients to examine the origin of the color gradients. In one model, a color gradient is assumed to be caused by a metallicit...
متن کاملOptical and Near-infrared Color Profiles in Nearby Early-type Galaxies and the Implied Age and Metallicity Gradients
We present results of an age and metallicity gradient analysis inferred from both optical and near-infrared surface photometry. The analysis is based on a sample of 36 nearby early-type galaxies, obtained from the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Surface brightness profiles were derived in each band, and used to study the color gradients of t...
